Frequently Asked Questions
Clear, careful answers about generic medicines and our pharmacy.
What are generic medicines?
A generic medicine contains the same active ingredient (the part that acts in the body) as an original, or "reference", medicine, in the same strength and form, such as a tablet or syrup. Generic medicines are approved by the drug regulator before they are sold.
A generic medicine may be sold under the name of its active ingredient or under a manufacturer's own brand name.
Why do medicine prices differ?
Prices can differ for many reasons, including the cost of research and development by the original company, marketing and brand-building, packaging, and the margins in the supply chain. The Government of India also controls the prices of certain medicines.
Price alone is not a measure of quality in either direction. Quality depends on how a medicine is made, tested and stored.
Are generic medicines the same as branded medicines?
A generic medicine must contain the same active ingredient, strength and form as the original. Regulators may also ask for evidence that it works in the body in a comparable way. The inactive ingredients, colour, shape and packaging can be different.
For some medicines, small differences can matter, so your doctor may prefer a particular product for you. Whether a generic option is suitable is a decision to make with your doctor, not something to assume.
Can I change my prescribed medicine myself?
No. Please do not change, replace, stop or adjust the dose of any prescribed medicine on your own. Always speak to the doctor who prescribed it first. If you are interested in a generic option, you can ask your doctor whether it is suitable for you.
Where can I get assistance regarding medicines?
Your doctor is the best person to guide you about your treatment. A qualified pharmacist at a licensed pharmacy can help with general questions such as how to read a medicine label or how to store a medicine.
You can also contact Nayak Medical & General Stores for general pharmacy enquiries. In a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital straight away.

Do I need a prescription to buy medicines?
Some medicines can be sold only against a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner. A responsible pharmacy will ask for it in those cases. Please keep your prescription handy when you visit.
How should I check a medicine before I buy it?
Check that the pack is sealed and undamaged, the printing is clear, and the label shows the name, manufacturer, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and the price. Always ask for a proper bill. See our Quality & Authenticity page for a full checklist.
How should I store my medicines?
Unless the label says otherwise, keep medicines in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Some medicines need special storage, so read the label or ask your pharmacist.
What should I do if I think I have received a wrong or damaged medicine?
Do not use it. Keep the pack and the bill, and speak to the pharmacy and your doctor. You can also report concerns about a medicine to your State drug regulator or the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
